The Challenge
Hoogland Coffee exists in a world of standardized logos and sanitized corporate aesthetics. Catered specifically to home brewers and discerning specialty coffee shops, they needed an identity that didn’t just claim authenticity but embodied it physically. The goal was to build a brand mark that screamed “Bold” and “Unique,” bridging the gap between urban coffee culture and the meticulous, hands-on craft of roasting genuine, high-altitude beans.
The Concept
We didn’t look at typefaces; we picked up brush pens. The entire visual philosophy rests on the transition from traditional, manual artistry to digital permanence. I hand-painted “HOOGLAND” on paper, capturing the visceral energy, varying pressure, and natural imperfections of the human hand. By digitizing this raw creation, we forged a brand mark that serves as a guarantee of artisan origin. It says: this is real, non-mass-produced, genuine flavor.
Typographic Anatomy
Every curve, thick-and-thin line, and dynamic angle in the Hoogland wordmark was strategically engineered for visual dominance:
- Custom Calligraphy: Each letter is unique, connected by a seamless flow that mimics the act of pouring coffee—fluid, dynamic, and full of life. It rejects corporate sterility.
- Aggressive Weight (Bold): The massive typographical weight doesn’t just ask for attention; it commands it. It symbolizes the intense, robust, and full-bodied flavor profile that Hoogland promises.
- Signature Underlines: The distinct, raw underlines under the ‘O’ and first ‘L’ are more than decorative accents. They provide structural balance and give the mark a signature “graffiti” signature feel, cementing its unique, modern, and rebellious identity in the marketplace.
The Impact
The finalized Hoogland Coffee logo stands as a bold declaration of craft. It is highly versatile—punchy enough to dominate a full coffee bag, yet rugged enough to be stamped on wooden crates or rough cardboard. By fusing raw human energy with professional design integrity, we built an identity that immediately signals to coffee shops and serious brewers that Hoogland is not just selling coffee; they are sharing a passion for the ultimate brewing experience.
